CHAPTER 20

River wasn’t lying about the sleep snuggling. She was drawn to any warm shape in her vicinity when she slept. Usually, it was Hank’s solid, round figure stretched out beside her. Today, blinking awake in the dark hotel room, thoroughly groggy and confused, she found herself wrapped in solid, freckled arms.

Jake’s steady breathing ruffled the hair at the back of her neck, and her body was spooned against his. Every hard plane of his long form was against every inch of her soft curves. It was wonderful and forbidden. Something else pressed solidly against River’s bum, and as understanding rushed over her, a wave of heat seared straight to the juncture of her thighs. River had to stop the sudden instinct to push herself back against him. She desperately wanted to experience more of him. It would be so easy for them to push down their underwear, for him to pull her back and slip himself between her legs.

The effort of sitting still was wreaking havoc on her body. A fine sheen of sweat broke out over her brow, and her breathing pulled quickly in and out of her lungs. She had to get it together before Jake woke up. He would be embarrassed enough at what his body was doing. Though he hadn’t voiced it out loud, this exact scenario was at the top of his list of concerns about sharing a bed.

As if sensing her torture and deciding to make it worse, Jake groaned in his sleep and pulled her body tighter against his. His hard and tantalizingly thick length settled between her ass cheeks, intensifying the ache that had taken up only inches away.

Suddenly, Jake’s body tensed, and his breathing stuttered and changed. River closed her eyes, forcing her breathing to move normally in and out of her lungs. His sudden stillness told her he’d woken. River almost laughed when he let out a gruff little moan deep in his throat.

Her entire body screamed at her to roll over. To claim Jake’s mouth. The persistent ache had taken hold of her brain and incessantly reminded her that it was only a tiny half-roll of both their bodies until she was on top of him. Then Jake could finally push her panties aside and slip inside her. She was wet enough. She’d been ready for so long; it would be easy. River moved, entirely unbidden, clenching her thighs against the throbbing, desperate to ease it, and her breath shuddered at the sensation. Jake quit breathing altogether.

River opened her mouth, and words came out without her meaning for them too. This was one of those times when she should have used her filter. Chase had often accused her of lacking one entirely, and after hearing what her brain had to say in this situation, she would have to agree with him.

“Some friends sleep together,” her mouth said. The words hung between them in the quiet hotel room like a fog. Oh, what the hell? Why had she said that? His only response was the tightening of his hand.
